WHAT IS YOUR EMPLOYMENT PLAN?

 

We all say that we are looking for a job and have a plan.  What is your plan?  There is no magic formula for finding a job.  It really is a process that takes hard work and dedication.  Listed below are some tips which we will be focusing on that you might consider.  Some of the materials you already have, and we will be adding to those, as well as asking for your input as to what is working for you.  No one has all of the answers.

 

1.     Design a resume that can be tailored to meet new or different job descriptions.  Update your resume weekly on websites and send updated resumes to key people in your network who can help you.

 

2.     Create a generic cover letter that can be easily redesigned for different applications.

 

3.     Outline a weekly plan with specifics for each day – see the example below.

 

4.     Practice "Answering The 20 Toughest Interview Questions" (See Section 8.4) and/or other ones that you would be expected to answer in your line of work.

 

5.     Develop a set of questions to ask at an interview or use the ones we will provide.

 

6.     Refine your interview techniques for:

       a.  Telephone interviews

       b.  One-on-one interviews

       c.   Group interviews

 

7.     Do informational interviewing once or twice a week.

 

8.     Develop a network of people to share your resumes with based upon materials we will be providing for you.  Keep in contact with key people who may know of job openings in your field of work.  Update and maintain your network often.

 

9.     Search the Internet daily for job leads.

 

10.   Read the area newspapers daily to find leads you can follow up on.

 

11.   Report daily or several times a week to a Colorado Workforce Center for leads.

 

12.   Contact private employment agencies.

 

13.   Attend job fairs.

 

14.   Make cold calls to companies that you would like to work for.

 

15.   Make follow-up calls to find out the status of jobs you have applied for.

 

16.   Meet with other people in your field who are looking for work to exchange ideas and support.
